TAROT IN COMMUNITY

An online space for queers, feminists, and leftists to learn tarot, and merge it with their work in the world

A light brown hand in a leopard print shirt touches some tarot cards on a leopard print cloth

Imagine learning tarot at a digestible pace, in a supportive community, and without compromising your values

How are you supposed to deepen your relationship with tarot when your boss just asked you to come back to the office after three years?

You're burnt out from listening to members of your meditation group talk about taking horse dewormer instead of a vaccine.

Life can demand so much that it's hard to know when you would even find the time for a weekly tarot pull.

You've done the work. You followed the tarot teachers on Instagram and TikTok.

You even turned on notifications for their posts.

But no matter how long you scroll, you can seem to turn their content into a tarot practice that backs you up when you make big decisions.

You've worked with teachers and online courses, but the meanings and methods don't stick in your head.

The difference between a tarot practice that sends you rushing to Google, and one that makes you feel intuitive, confident and connected isn't another guidebook. It isn't another long class taught by someone with no consideration for your needs as a learner.

It's not pretending that card meanings don't matter at all because you're done with trying to make them click with your reading style.

It's not enrolling in another masterclass with an apolitical (at best) tarot teacher.

These methods have their place, but they don't work for most people.

Free yourself from apolitical woo

Those methods definitely don’t work if your tarot practice is about taking meaningful action to improve the world, not just predict the future.

If your intuitive practice of tarot is a compass for surviving our current hellscape, or a book for demystifying capitalist power, you may have trouble understanding how traditional card meanings relate to your life. Like, at all.

And that makes perfect sense when you think about how tarot is most often taught.

It's touchy-feely, out of touch, extremely white leaning woo-woo open season.

Have you ever wondered what makes tarot, or crystals, or herbalism so appealing to fash?

These practices have been emptied of stabilizing ethics due to wide adoption.

Many of the people who work with these tools don't ever think about what makes their practice ethical, or even safe.

Apolitical woo is dangerous (sorry to get serious, but it's real) because there's no values attached. It works for a misogynist yoga bro leaning into his "divine masculine" as well as it works for the "shaman" who showed up for the Trump insurrection.

The spirituality to alt-right pipeline is real as fuck.

I've been in classes where the things said about vaccines and psych meds have been entirely fucked up. I've had to leave programs due to circumstances that ethics could have prevented.

I have respect for all my teachers, past, present and future.

These experiences made me double down on building my practice around my values.

It's work that happens in spite of how conservative spiritual spaces can be. This work must continue. We know the dangerous consequences of conservative spiritual spaces.

We have to build alternatives, and honestly, we have to build them quick.

Glued to the guidebook=ignoring your intuition

I learned tarot as a kid, back when the internet was mostly for Xanga, Myspace, and AOL chat rooms...etcetera.

There was no Googling tarot cards. There wasn’t even AskJeeves-ing tarot cards.

No. To memorize tarot meanings you had to sit with a book.

That made learning tarot really fuckin' hard! And I'm someone who likes books!

The problem with the guidebooks is that they're generally written by people who are NOTHING like you.

They're not eating an overpriced salad at their desk wondering when the next racial microaggression will pop up in the Zoom meeting.

They're not struggling with whether to completely cut their mom out of their lives because she hates trans people.

They're writing tarot guidebooks for the world they live in, not the one you live in.

In the world where you and I live, it's tough to make time for tarot because, uh...work, and home, and school, and family, and community care, and meetings, and and and...

It can all feel so endless. How can you build an intuitive practice that helps you find clarity and peace if you don't even have time to pick up your meds from the CVS?

How can you read for others if you don't even have time to read for yourself.

How can you memorize card meanings when they don't feel personal to you. When they seem like they were written for somebody else.

You may be struggling to learn tarot because most options aren't flexible, aren't relevant, and don't center people like you.

Tarot in Community makes tarot relevant to our world

…and our world is...well, it seems like it's sucking even harder than before. Which hardly seems possible tbh.

There's the rise of fascism, climate crisis, an uptick in white supremacist hate. Everything costs an arm, a leg, and your firstborn upfront as a deposit.

It can feel like connecting to your intuition wouldn't change anything, wouldn't help anything.

But that's not true!

When we hone our intuition, we're tapping into one of our survival instincts. It's advantageous to be able to know things that have been hidden from view.

When we connect with our intuition, we can accept that we've done the best we could. We better understand our limits, because we've checked in with ourselves and the unseen influences around us.

It's a skill that keeps us safe, feeds people, and helps us to sense and avoid danger.

Marginalized people deserve a heads-up in a world that hates us.

Tarot is one of the tools that can sound the alarm when we need to be more alert.

🔮This you? 👀

You're:

  • a spirit-led activist who knows intuition is an asset to movement builders

  • an artist who connects other planes of existence with our own

  • a writer who knows creativity is its own kind of intuition

  • a spirit worker in search of a community that's not chock fulla conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxxers

  • a badass looking to connect with tarot as you heal from religious trauma

and:

  • You understand that finding a space to practice tarot and deepen your relationship to intuition is important. You also know that finding one that isn't flat-out conservative can feel impossible.

  • You want a supportive community where you can learn tarot, ask questions, and make connections that hold you accountable.

  • You want to free yourself from Googling every. single. card. you pull.

  • You want to memorize card meanings (finally!) and make some of your own, too

  • You want to merge your intuitive tools and practices with your movement work and everything else

  • You need a learning environment that harmonizes with your learning style, but doesn't tolerate a bunch of bullshit

Tarot in Community is an online space for queers, feminists, and leftists to learn tarot and merge it with their work in the world

Hey! I’m Cyrée

I learned tarot in my community.

I learned to read cards with the support of my family. I read for my mother, my aunts, and friends by the time I hit puberty.

I learned how to cover my head, clean my home, and keep my client's confidences.

In the 22 years since I started reading, I've read for hundreds of clients and taught many students.

I opened Temperance Queer Tarot in 2011 out of a need for trans and queer affirming intuitive services.

My tarot service has grown alongside my work in the disability justice movement.

Organizers and activists are essential to movements for justice. But so are writers, artists, caretakers, bodyworkers, birthworkers, and yes, intuitives.

Yet there are few spaces that can hold the blend of thought and practice required to meld a spiritual life and movement work.

The ones that exist can be cliquey, or even downright gatekept.

I'm creating Tarot in Community as an intentional learning space for leftist spirit-led folks.

That's my goal in all my work at Temperance Queer Tarot, and elsewhere in my work.

Here's some testimonials from my clients and students about what they got out of working with me.

The first two are from a client. (I operate with a strict confidentiality policy on my end, so client testimonials are always anonymous):

"Cyrée was fantastic. I came to the reading very stressed, yet he immediately put me at ease with his introduction to his lineage and methods.

His reading was insightful, confirming some things I knew, answering questions where I had some inklings, and helping me better understand what I could do to make an unpleasant situation more productive.

Because he seemed both no-nonsense and caring, I didn’t feel judged or embarrassed when he raised a concern about my emotional response to the situation.

Finally, he suggested I explore money thoughts picked up in childhood.

This was a complete surprise to me and didn’t immediately strike me as useful, but I spent some time that evening reflecting on it.

Sure enough, two money myths came up, and both immediately raised feelings of shame.

I’m glad to have the opportunity to work through those myths, rather than continuing to let them steer the ship.

In case it isn’t obvious, I enjoyed meeting with Cyrée, valued his insights, and would work with him again."

Now the second one:

"I recently had a second reading with Cyrée to get more clarity on a career situation that we had explored earlier. In the first reading, he helped me understand what was causing the situation.

In the second one, he got very specific in terms of actions that could make a change in work environment go more smoothly.

One of his suggestions has been so appreciated by my supervisor, that they've mentioned it in nearly every conversation we've had since."

I also had the joy and fortune of offering the Queer Tarot Mentorship for the first time from May 2022-May 2023.

Here's what a graduate of the program said about working with me:

"Queer Tarot Mentorship is a gift to the gifted who have been praying for an opportunity to finely tune their skills.

I went in knowing I was called to begin a public tarot/divination service but felt a tinge of self-doubt that could only be quelled with reputable training and deep study.

Within this mentorship, I felt as if I was able to learn the skills and gain the confidence to safely read tarot for the public within a container that welcomed my whole self and ever-curious nature.

I’m eternally grateful for this mentorship and Cyrée Jarelle for imparting his knowledge and deep care for tarot and our communities."

We often learn tarot alone.

It's the reality in a society that centered around imperialist forms of Christianity.

You may fear the rejection of family and friends if they knew about your tarot practice.

You may think you'd face stigma if you let it slip that you're an intuitive at work.

Tarot's associations with being weird, and scary and "out there" may have kept you from living your practice in community.

We shouldn't be forced to practice in secret. Our enemies benefit when we scoff at the role of intuition in our movements.

Intuitive leftists should meet each other. That's the kind of environment I'm committed to creating.

You're gunna love Tarot in Community if:

You already work or gather in spaces that exist to make the world a free, safe place

  • You're down for rigorous study of tarot

  • You aren't afraid of a lively discussion about intuition and tarot

  • You're actively working to dismantle anti-blackness, patriarchy, ableism, misogyny, trans and queer antagonism, and all systems of oppression

  • You know that if you bring that mess over here you will be e-jected

  • You're serious about learning and practicing tarot

  • You know the importance of queer, feminist, and anti-racist readings of tarot

  • You're ready to move into or deepen a practice of tarot with support and flexibility

NOW IS THE TIME TO COMMIT TO OUR GIFTS.

WE MAY NEED THEM SOONER THAN WE THINK.

Ok, one last testimonial for the road:

"Cyree is compassionate and real and straightforward, and he helped me to see what was best for me even when I had a hard time seeing it for myself.

While he wasn't pushy about the recommendation to leave a toxic situation, he was clear and coached me to make a decision I knew was cognitively right but wasn't emotionally ready for at the time.

Also his prediction came true within that week and I'm so glad I listened to him. I think that speaks for itself.

I highly recommend Cyree as a tarot reader."
